Identifying With Your Interviewer

Have you ever noticed that we tend to like people whom we have things in common with? A new coworker is often met with indifference until you realize that they read the same technical blogs as you, follow the same sports team as you, or enjoys espresso to the degree that you do—and suddenly you are best friends!

The same principle applies to hiring—when a hiring manager finds that he has something in common with a prospective employee, that little bit of bonding can potentially make the difference between picking them over another comparable prospect. So, finding that there is something the two of you are both interested in can be a very valuable discovery! But let’s clarify one absolutely important point first. Being interested in something that your interviewer is also interested in is VERY different than pretending to be interested in that thing. One will potentially be a bonding experience that works in your favor, and the other will land your resume in the garbage.

So, what are some ways of discovering common interests with your interviewer?

  1. Who is the interviewer? Generally, there’s an agenda sent out ahead of time that includes interview participants. If not, check with your recruiter or HR contact and ask for that information.
  2. Are they on LinkedIn? Look for shared technology groups, previous companies, and first-level connections.
  3. Do they have a bio on the company website? Though possibly not as fruitful as LinkedIn, you may yet find some useful tidbits.
  4. Google. Care must be taken here to not look like an internet stalker, but discovering that your interviewer is a fellow ultra-marathoner is just too good to pass up!

Look for an appropriate spot during the interview to bring up your common interest. A good time might be during the few minutes of pre-interview chit-chat. “I couldn’t help noticing while reviewing your LinkedIn profile that you worked over in the UK for two years. I did as well! How did you like your time over there?”

People enjoy discovering common interests. Find out what you might have in common with your interviewer, and you’ll maximize your chances.
