In business, summer is typically slow when it comes to...well, everything. Not the least of the slow-downs is the revolving door of people coming and going from vacations. Decision makers are OOO (out of office), approvals for spending are challenging to chase down, and job interviews are often difficult to get scheduled. So, if you are considering a career change, is now really the time to throw your name into the hat for that role that looked interesting to you? I think it is!
If you think about it, when interviewing for a role, your biggest barrier to being selected as the candidate of choice is your competition (the other candidates interviewing for the same position as you). Many factors will come into play as the list is whittled down (skills, experience, personality, even your alma mater) but the fact is that the more good candidates you are up against, the slimmer your chances are for being selected. The good news is that right now there are a whole lot of job seekers who are also on vacation and have temporarily removed themselves from the job market. Fewer candidates interviewing, less competition for you.
Another factor to consider is that the economy is perking back up and unemployment is drifting back down. This also affects the number of candidates who are in the market looking for their next opportunity. Fewer candidates out of work also means fewer candidates competing for the job you're interested in. Between the summer vacation schedules and the smaller pool of job seekers overall, your number of competitors should be at an all-time low! That makes for some positive odds in your favor.
So, if you become aware of an opening for a role that aligns with your career desires, I'd say go for it! And get yourself an interview before those other candidates get back, unpack, and resume their job search.
