Should companies be hiring or firing? Demand for workers has roared back over the past two years. But labour supply has not kept pace, and shortages are pervasive. That means many firms need to hire. The basic premise of limitless leave is that employees work hard to complete the tasks they have been given and in return, they are able to take as much annual leave as they like, for vacation, sick days, bereavement, and any other purpose. Zuckerman Spaeder partner Jason Knott cautions employers that inadequate background checks and workplace violence prevention could open them up to costly liability if an employee commits a crime off the clock. Generally, an employer can be held liable for an employee’s misconduct within the course and scope of their work. States invest in public colleges (and give nonprofit status to private ones) to build a better-educated workforce. But what if graduates move away? The biggest losers of that kind of brain drain are small, rural states — places lacking the urban hubs that offer opportunity to newly minted Bachelors, according to an innovative new data source that uses LinkedIn to estimate how many college graduates stay in-state.
